In Tahiti's ancient society, the "tatau" tattoo represented ones genealogy and social ranking.  Different figures of squares, circles, cresents, the letter "c" and the letter "z"  were mostly used on the joints of a woman's finger.  Men however were tattooed all over their body including their neck and ears with geometric as well as turtles, dolphins and tikis.  Only the face was left untattooed except for the occassional warrior or priest, who might wear a special emblem on his forehead or lips.  The designs used in Tahitian tattoos are mostly represented on their paddles and their tikis.
