In New Zealand know as Aotearo (Land of the Long White Cloud) to its native Maori people, used the unfurling fern as symbols in their tattoo "moko". The fern represented the beginning and contiuation of life. Despite the dominance of the European culture in New Zealand the Maori tattoed their faces as representation of their heritage.
